Photography
Food photography is central to the OrderUp brand. We know that images of food drive orders, and for this reason, using the right kind of photography is imperative. Keep in mind that when using food photography we want to accurately portray the customer experience, and as such the food photograph should match the food the customer is receiving. When searching for stock photography, or shooting your own, follow the guidelines below.
Lighting
Our photography should look as though it was shot in natural light. The photos should be bright and airy. Avoid any dark or unnatural lighting.
Bright, natural lighting
Dark, unnatural-looking lighting
Environment
Pay special attention to the environment the food is in. The background should look natural, not stylized, and should not look as if it were shot in a studio.
Natural dining table environment
Unnatural staged background
Composition
To keep our look consistent, the photographs should be taken from a top-down or side view, with the food taking up most of the shot. The angle should be close up on the food item, not far away. Keep the photo free of any unnecessary clutter that would distract from the food.
Close up side angle view with the food item being central to the composition
Far away angle view, food is too small in the composition, background is busy and distracting
Appetizingness
Food looks best when it is fresh and presented beautifully. Make sure the food items look high quality. Do not select pictures with hands in the frame or with half-eaten food.
Beautifully prepared dish that looks fresh and appetizing
Half-eaten food touched by strangers hands -- not appetizing!
